overall • born and bred in burlington vermont to a father of significant wealth thanks to working at the state's capital of montpelier as a governor, and a mother whose wedding dresses earned top spots in fashion shows, dewi's childhood was luxurious and probably one of the best she could have had. she was, needless to say, spoiled beyond belief, but thanks to being looked and cared politely by her mother, she never become a spoiled brat. before it was time to be sent to school, and in no way would her mother allow her only daughter - and only child at that, to be sent off to a day care, her mother would bring dewi with her to work. dewi would spend endless hours gazing at wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses and numerous beautiful soon-to-be-wed women, always wishing she could be like that.
dewi was equally as close to her father as she was to her mother. although her father was off on trips quite often, which left very little time to see one another, when he was around though, the family would go on outings and have quite a nice time together. her father would always remember to bring some little trinket from his last trip back with him for dewi, and sometimes for her mother. one time she got a locket from him from some place in california, it was silver, beautiful and small, and on the outside was carved little things that resembled branches. dewi wore it and since then has never taken it off. school years came and went after that, and dewi was almost always top in her class.
thirteen years old was when the accident happened. dewi's father and mother got in a huge unexpected fight. her father went off and got drunk that night, and after a couple hours, her mother felt pathetic and apologetic and went off to fetch him. at first dewi had wanted to stay home, then decided to got with her and see if she could help. they found him at a pub he always went to with his work friends of saturday nights, and almost forced him into the car. on the road, her father was yelling and screaming - drunkly, and accidently pushed his wife, dewi's mother really hard, making the vehicle swerve and crash into the vehicle on the other side of the road. dewi, in the back seat, lived with only a few scars from the accident, while her parents died that night in the hospital.
the first year after that was the worst for her, but after a while she loosened up realizing it was time to move on. she was sent to her aunt's apartment in manhattan, although dewi saw her rarely since most of the time her aunt was out working in the public gardens or doing some volunteer work. dewi ended up putting a picture of her mother and a picture of her father in the two spaces of the locket which she still wore. she got early graduation from college to land a spot as a top newspaper intern.

genie picked up the blue and grey striped shirt, and the plain orange in the other. why was she taking so long to decide on wearing one simple shirt? it wasn't like she was going anywhere special. she was just going to go to paradise for the afternoon, sit around and drink some tea. thinking about her plans for the afternoon made her feel slightly... old. like one of those old grey haired grandmas that sit around in old coffee shops drinking tea and staring at you, scaring everything out of you before running out of the place. thinking about this, she decided she had better remember to bring a book, or at least a magazine. she didn't feel like creeping people out or looking all sad or stupid because she was going to be there sitting at a table all alone.
genie slipped on the blue and grey striped shirt. it seemed like she always went with the shirt with blue on it in those situations. she could never totally figure out why. maybe she thought it would look good with her blue eyes? she dropped the subject as she went looking for a good book. preferably one she'd already read so she wouldn't have to pay too much attention to it. she wanted a book she could just skim or something. she picked up a random one, and grabbed her sling bag, putting the book in, and grabbing a white beanie hat and flopping it onto her head, heading out the door.
outside was nice out, as she walked to paradise. there was sun, a few scattered clouds, and just a nice relaxed feeling. paradise wasn't too far from her house. but then again, nothing was ever too far away in this little town it seemed like. she walked into the place, and was met with a burst of fresh smelling coffee beans. it was really rather nice, even if she wasn't too fond of coffee herself. but the smell made her feel happy for some reason. she went up to the counter and ordered a small english breakfast tea. she paid, got the tea, and went off in search of a table.
the place was packed, not actually a surprise. it seemed that others had the same idea as her. dewi glanced around and spotted an open table in the corner where somebody had just left. perfect for her. she went over and set her tea down, and smiled to herself as she got out the book, and sort of just stared at it, suddenly reading wasn't as appealing as she had hoped. she put the book on the table, and took a sip of the tea, letting her own bag drop to the floor next to her.
