to see adelaide suarez in chinatown was much like seeing a fish in water. it was one of her favorite communites to be in and according to her, beat out little italy any day. she found herself gravitated towards chinatown on a daily basis, especially when she was hungry. there were rountine trips addie made to pick up sweet and sour chicken, general tso's chicken, or another meal high in fact or msg. it was one of her guilty pleasures and something she indulged in often. the chinese culture was one that adelaide loved to immerse herself in. the restaurants regarded her as one of their regulars and she was no longer treated by many of the employees as a customer but as an old friend.
the walk to chinatown was not a long one from adelaide's small apartment. she only had to walk eight to ten blocks which was nothing in the large city of new york. she suited up in peacoat, gloves, and a thick scarf to brace the cold. it would be a somewhat torturous walk that would most likely get frostbite her due to the cold winds but addie was ready to brace it for her favorite thing in the world, chinese found. addie brushed her hair quickly, took a peek at herself in the mirror, and shoved her phone in her pocket before venturing down and out of her apartment and then apartment building.
with determined walking and a hungry stomach that was nagging at her, it took adelaide no longer than twenty minutes to get to chinatown. before she knew it she was among hungry customers like herself and the asian community who ran chinatown. as addie pushed her long black hair out of her face, she knew than many would assume she was part of the asian community and not the large group of customers who just came down for the food. adelaide always had been nagged by not knowing her ethnicity. as she looked into the mirror she saw her almond eyes and black hair and wondered, who had provided the sperm for her mothers and what he was like? not knowing things was something that always angered addie not know who she was caused the ultimate confusion and frustration. addie tried to push the thoughts of her sperm donor of a father away as she innately noted the ethnicities of the lucky people who knew who and what they were.
the peng family restaurant smelled of the beautiful aroma of rice and stirfry even outside of the restaurant. adelaide stomped off a considerable amount of snow and slush on the sidewalk before stepping into the small restaurant. a young girl name laine of about seventeen was standing at the podium staring down at her cell phone when the bells of the door brought her attention up to addie. it seemed as if addie had watched laine grow over the years and the two smiled at each other, knowing their routine. "the usual?" laine asked in slight accent out of courtesy and procedure. "of course," addie nodded out of habit and looked back to her normal corner booth. the red leather seats were sitting in wait for addie and she smiled at the fact no one was occupying her area.
the walk back to her seat was a short one and with each step she took was a creaking noise to warn everyone in the restaurant she was coming. out of innate curiosity, the people already in the restaurant looked up to see who was entering. addie smiled at a person here and there as she sat in her seat and removed her shield of winter wear. she carefully removed her gloves, scarf, and peacoat before answering laine's question of what she wanted to drink. "can i have a diet crush please, thank you." as laine scuttled off to get addie's drink, she noted the people arond her. there was a large family enjoying some family genuine family time, a couple on a date that was clearly not going well, and a few other single college students like herself. the place was booming even for their popularity.
